FC off to a good start

5-0 win against Leher TS

1. FC Köln officially began the 2017/18 season on Saturday with a first round match up in the DFB-Pokal against fifth division side Leher TS. FC won 5-0 courtesy of goals by Leo Bittencourt, Frederik Sorensen, Jhon Cordoba, Simon Zoller, and Sehrou Guirassy.

The perfect start? Quite possibly, yes. Peter Stöger's men dismantled the opposition on Saturday with five different players getting on the scoring sheet. The 5-0 win against Leher TS means FC advance to the next round of the DFB-Pokal.

Stöger opted for what looked like a 4-2-3-1 system in the opening match of the 2017/18 season for FC. Jhon Cordoba spearheaded the attack against fifth division side Leher TS. The hosts were clearly aware of their underdog status and kept an organized defensive line up until the 28th minute. It was at this point that a Milos Jojic shot ricocheted its way to Leo Bittencourt, who made no mistake from the box. It took just a few six more minutes for FC to double their lead, this time with Frederik Sorensen getting on the end of a miscleared ball in the box (34'). Leher had their best chance of the game just before halftime when a curling shot from outside the box struck the FC crossbar (42').

The second half got off to a disastrous start for the hosts, as Arwin Hashemi stopped a Jojic header on the goalline with his hand. The result was a red card for Hashemi and a penalty for FC, which Jhon Cordoba converted clinically (50'). Substitutes Simon Zoller (68') and Sehrou Guirassy (74') then added two more goals to secure the 5-0 win for FC.

FC can now shift focus to the opening match in the Bundesliga. The league campaign begins with a road derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The match will take place on Sunday, August 20. Kick off at the Borussia-Park is scheduled for 18:00.
