FC draw 1-1

A hard-fought point

1. FC Köln drew 1-1 (0-0) against TSG Hoffenheim on Bundesliga Matchday 30. Leo Bittencourt put the hosts in front before Kerem Demirbay equalized for the visitors in the 93rd minute.

Konstantin Rausch took the place of Christian Clemens in the 1. FC Köln starting line up. The rest of the starters were the same ones that took the field in Augsburg.

Even start

The match began with two equally attacking sides coming up against organized defenses. The first half was spent with both sides mostly neutralizing one another, with no clear-cut chances to take the lead. 1. FC Köln needed a set piece to come close to scoring. Jojic swung in a corner from the right, which Osako flicked on, but Dominique Heintz could not beat Baumann at the far post (40’). As a result, the two sides went goalless into the break.

Bittencourt scores

In the second half FC pressed with hard-running attacking midfielders who put pressure on Hoffenheim’s build-up play. Then Peter STöger went for an early change in personnel by bringing on Neven Subotic for the already cautioned Heintz (52’). The breakthrough came just minutes later when Klünter played a beautiful pass into the path of Hector. The Germany international picked up the ball in the penalty area and passed it perfectly-timed to Bittencourt. The agile winger slotted it home easily to put FC in the lead following a great combination (58’).

Unlucky ending

The match was an exciter in the closing minutes. The visitors had to push it forward now, but Horn stood tall against Süle (80’). Cologne defended deeply and focused on quick counters. Jojic tested Baumann (85’). Minutes later, Modeste could not turn the keeper, but passed the ball back to Jojic, who could not score either (90’). With three of the four minutes of stoppage time played, Demirbay slotted home after FC failed to make the clearance in the box.
