Temperatures were well below freezing point on Wednesday as FC head coach Stefan Ruthenbeck began training with his players. A much-needed warm up session was followed by two sets of match simulations. Ruthenbeck took the cold weather into account when designing Wednesday’s training session: “We decided to work with a bigger field, in order to keep the players in constant motion.”
Birk Risa, Sven Müller, and Jannes Horn had to sit out Wednesday having all picked up a cold. Matthias Lehmann and Marcel Risse trained individually, while Chris Führich had to be sidelined after suffering some muscular issues.
Ruthenbeck is expecting a much different opponent in VfB Stuttgart compared to RB Leipzig. Risks must be taken more carefully because the FC coach believes his side will “enjoy more of the ball” and “Stuttgart will look to counter” against the FC possession.
A strength of the current FC side lies in the mental strength, according to the coach. “The pressure is enormous, but the players are making sure themselves that the team spirit remains positive. Two players that have not featured heavily in recent weeks, Dominic Maroh and Matthias Lehmann, have left a particular impression on Ruthenbeck. “They both find themselves in a difficult situation, but they are putting themselves at the service of the team and giving 100%. It is very positive.”
