Match Preview: Leverkusen

Bayer gaining momentum

Matchday 10 of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season will see 1. FC Köln visit Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen had not missed a berth in European competition since 2010. That changed when they finished the 2016/17 Bundesliga season in 12th place. The goal for the current season is firmly set on returning to European competition, but with 3 wins, 3 draws, and 3 defeats thus far, the path to the top has shown already that it will not be easy.

Heiko Herrlich was appointed in the summer to coach this Leverkusen side and it appears his side have gotten into a groove in the past week. A 5-1 win on the road against Borussia Mönchengladbach was nothing short of impressive. Follow that up with a 4-1 win at home in the second round of the DFB-Pokal against 1. FC Union Berlin and you suddenly are looking at a team with plenty of confidence in attack.

Confidence had been sorely lacking in the 1. FC Köln camp as well, but the 3-1 midweek win against Hertha Berlin in the Cup will surely act as a boost for the players of FC. Even better news arrives in the form of Marco Höger, Matthias Lehmann, and Konstantin Rausch, who were all able to return to team training on Friday. The latter two were also announced to have signed contract extensions with the club.
