Hansi Flick made one change from the Bayern side that secured a 4:1 win over Lazio on Tuesday evening. Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting replaced Kingsley Coman in the starting line-up.
Markus Gisdol also opted for a single alteration from FC’s 1:0 defeat against VfB Stuttgart last weekend. Salih Özcan came into the side in place of Kingsley Ehizibue, who dropped to the bench.
The opening stages in Munich were tight and well-contested. Niklas Süle shot wide from range and there was a simple save from Timo Horn from Leroy Sané in what was an uneventful first 15 minutes. However, in that time, Bayern were beginning to turn the screw and went ahead in the 18th minute. Leon Goretzka’s cross to the back post was headed home by Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting.
FC were trying to hit Bayern on the counter but a combination of good defending and the missing final pass meant that Markus Gisdol’s men were unable to capitalise. Bayern extended their lead in the 33rd minute as Leon Goretzka grabbed his second assist, teeing up Robert Lewandowski for his 27th goal of the season. Bayern went into the break two goals to the good.
FC made a double substitution at the start of the second half as Jannes Horn and Jan Thielmann replaced Rafael Czichos and Emmanuel Dennis. The changes brought an immediate effect as Ellyes Skhiri managed to dribble past the Bayern defence and loop over Manuel Neuer to give FC a way back into the game.
FC were causing Bayern problems as half chances came and went but, unfortunately, Bayern’s quality told as Thomas Müller fed Lewandowski to notch up his 28th goal of the campaign. Domincik Drexler robbed Manuel Neuer of the ball and hit the post in what was the chance to get back into the game again. Serge Gnabry’s late double then added shine to the scoreline for Bayern. FC are next in action on Sunday against SV Werder Bremen at 15:30 CET.
