Stöger on Stuttgart

"Believe in our chances"

The international break is over as 1. FC Köln get back to Bundesliga action. FC head coach Peter Stöger spoke on Thursday’s press conference about the upcoming match against VfB Stuttgart.

Peter Stöger spoke on Thursday’s press conference about…

  • …the fitness of Claudio Pizarro: “He arrived in good shape, but of course there is nothing like actual match fitness from playing matches. There are certain things like duels and playing with the ball in a team that just simply cannot be simulated alone. I believe he is improving with each training session.”
  • the team: “I gave my players the weekend off because they have to prepare for another phase with many matches, which will be physically demanding. It is important that the are feeling fresh. I think we are well prepared for our current situation. The reality is that we need to start picking up points. In the end it is the result that anyone will be talking about.”
  • …Rausch and Osako: “Kocka returned with a positive spirit. Personal positive experiences can inject positivity into the rest of the team. We are also happy for Yuya, who scored while on international duty.”
  • …his job as a coach: “Of course, as a human being, I am thankful when I am given praise from the outside. It is a difficult situation that we are in. At the same time, I understand it is my responsibility when things are not going our way. That is my role here as a person that stands in the public. I also know that I am the one that has to find the right words for the players. I need to get them into the right mindset. Every year there are teams that struggle. It gets harder and harder with each negative result, but we have to keep focused on our goal.”
  • …VfB Stuttgart: “The team is filled with experienced players. They definitely have the quality to play in the Bundesliga. They have played well so far and I think they could have even more points than their tally indicates. But I also believe in our chances to win there. We will have to see how they return from the international break.”
