Interview in Geißbockecho

Clemens: “We want to make it right”

Christian Clemens put a very successful start to the season behind him, only for an injury in October to halt his progress. Since the beginning of the year, the winger has been available for selection once more, but the opportunity to set things right after the loss to Union Berlin was abruptly set aside. Set-backs, however, don’t make the 27-year-old despair – it’s quite the opposite.

Christian, you have a five-day trip without points behind you. What is the mood like with you and the team?

We obviously wanted to make things right again in Aue, after the loss to Union Berlin. Therefore, the overall impression of the trip is somewhat clouded. No-one is satisfied with the performance in Berlin. Despite that, the decision to call off the game in Aue was the right call. Whoever seen the pitch would have known that a half-normal game of football would have been impossible.

Was the postponement obvious that morning, looking out the window of the team hotel?

We heard lots of bad weather forecasts the night before the game, but at that time there was no snow on the ground. It began that morning and then it soon became obvious, that a postponement was the only sensible decision.

After your Syndesmosis ligament tear in November, you managed to play your first competitive game since in Berlin. What’s your personal summary?

I‘m really happy, that I’m able to play again. After the long time out, it was nice to be able to be back on the pitch with the team in front of a great crowd. That doesn’t change anything, however, as we weren’t satisfied with our performance in Berlin.

The injury in Autumn was not your first serious injury. You’ve already had to go through a few in the past. How was it this time? Especially given how you had started the season, with six scorer points (two goals, four assists) in your first five games.

It was very frustrating. For the team and for me personally, the beginning of the season went very well. But there’s no point moaning about it. I immediately brought myself into the new situation – that’s part of football. My focus lay permanently with getting fit again.

Did you develop a hard shell throughout the course of the year, or was it always part of your personality to quickly put setbacks right?

That simply comes with experience. Rehab is never an easy time. But to moan or complain brings nothing. There are much worse injuries. I was out for around three months, but now I’m back and I’m happy to be able to help the team on the pitch once more.

Who helped you most during this time?

The support from my girlfriend, my family and those around me and my agent.
