6:1 loss

Defeat in Bremen

1. FC Köln fell to a 6:1 defeat to Werder Bremen on Saturday afternoon at the Weserstadion. Dominick Drexler scored the only goal of the game for FC.

Team news

Florian Kohfeldt opted for three alterations to the starting line-up from the match against Mainz. Milot Rashica, Niclas Füllkrug and Kevin Vogt came into the side in place of Joshua Sargent, Leonardo Bittencourt and Christian Groß.

Markus Gisdol made two changes from the FC side that started the game against Eintracht Frankfurt. Florian Kainz (suspended) and Jhon Cordoba (injured) were unable to be part of the squad and were replaced by Dominick Drexler and Anthony Modeste.

Bremen score three quick goals

Both sides had early chances in the game to go ahead. While Timo Horn was tested by Milot Rashica’s effort from the edge of the box, Anthony Modeste almost fired FC ahead but Jiri Pavlenka was in the way. The game was tense, but Werder would make the breakthrough midway through the half. Maximilian Eggestein’s effort fell to Yuya Osako, who found the top corner from close range.

They would double that advantage just five minutes later, as Rashica made his way down the left-hand side. The Kosovo international then fired through the legs of Timo Horn. Things got worse three minutes later, as Marco Friedl crossed to Niclas Füllkrug and he managed to get his toe onto the end of the cross and deflect it into the back of the net.

Second-half sees Drexler score

Markus Gisdol made two changes at the break as Noah Katterbach and Jan Thielmann came on for Elvis Rexhbecaj and Mark Uth. It seemed to give FC some stability but Werder managed to find a way through to score a fourth. Rashica’s initial effort hit the post before Davy Klaassen followed up to fire home. Osako made it five moments later, sweeping Theodor Gebre Selassie’s cross into the net.

FC got on the scoresheet just after the hour mark, after Rashica’s backpass was too short and Dominick Drexler pounced to slot past Pavlenka. That wouldn’t be a turn of the tide however, as Rashica played in Sargent and he looped the ball over Timo Horn to make it six. Tim Lemperle had a chance to score moments after coming on for his debut, but shot narrowly wide.
