Jonas Hector entered the pitch as the first player as training began at 10:29am. The first session on the pitch with the ball after having completed various performance and physical checks and tests over the past three days. Under the glowing sun, FC head coach Markus Gisdol and his coaching staff put the players through their paces in the burning heat.
“We have to come to terms with the weather, we are going to keep going to the programme and train intensively. At the most, it will mean changing our training times due to the heat,” said Markus Gisdol after the season. “We knowingly gave the players a longer break, as we wanted our pre-season to be very intense without many free days. We will use the coming six weeks well and work on any deficits.”
At the start of training, Jannes Horn returned following his loan from Hannover 96. He was joined by Jens Castrop and Jonas Urbig from the FC youth academy. Anthony Modeste (muscular problems) trained individually. Vincent Koziello, Marcel Risse, Louis Schaub and Lasse Sobiech have been pardoned from training in order to speak to other clubs. Joao Queiros will train with the under-21s from next week.
At the beginning of pre-season – on Wednesday and Friday – there were the obligatory Corona tests for the entire squad, coaching staff and backroom staff. Two players tested positively for the virus, with both speaking to the health authorities and are in quarantine at home. All other tests were negative.
Independent from that, the training and matches from the under-16s up to the under-19s were suspended as a precaution after a youth academy player had contact to an infected person.
