Sebastian Hoeness made two alterations from the Hoffenheim side which won 3:0 against Hertha BSC during the weekend. Kevin Vogt missed our through injury and Munas Dabbur dropped to the bench, as Havard Nordtveit and Ihlas Bebou come into the line-up.
Markus Gisdol opted for just one change after the victory against Schalke on Wednesday evening. Rafael Czichos missed out through injury and Noah Katterbach got the nod to replace him in defence.
After both teams showed a willingness to get forward early on, Hoffenheim were handed an early penalty. Sava-Arangel Cestic handled a shot that was headed off target, leaving Sven Jablonski no choice but to award a penalty. Andrej Kramaric stepped up and sent Timo Horn the wrong way from 12 yards. FC stabilised themselves well after the goal however, and went in search of an equaliser.
Ellyes Skhiri’s diagonal pass picked out the run of Kingsley Ehizibue behind the Hoffenheim defence, only to not make anything of the chance. The hosts added a second just before the half hour mark, as a half-cleared corner was headed back in and cleverly flicked home by Christopher Baumgartner. Marius Wolf almost had FC back in the game before the break but a great save by Oliver Baumann from close range and later on the post meant that Hoffenheim had a two-goal lead at half-time.
The second period began with more pressure but some early yellow cards to begin the half disrupted the flow somewhat. Markus Gisdol brought on Anthony Modeste and Ismail Jakobs in search of a way back into the game with FC trying to build on a solid start. However, Modeste fouled Baumgartner in the box and Kramaric sent Horn the wrong way once more to kill the game off.
Anthony Modeste did, though, have an opportunity to reduce the arrears when Marius Wolf was fouled in the area. Baumann, however, was able to save. Modeste headed wide late on from a Dominick Drexler cross, with Sven Jablonski bringing the game to an end right on 90 minutes. FC’s next match will be at home at the RheinEnergieSTADION against DSC Arminia Bielefeld.
