FC bow out of the Youth League

1. FC Köln are out of the 2021-22 UEFA Youth League. Despite the two brave performances, FC’s European journey has come to an end. A 3:1 defeat to KRC Genk in Belgium followed the 4:2 loss in Franz-Kremer-Stadion.

Level at the break

The game almost got off to the worse possible start after three minutes as András Németh brought a strong save out of Jonas Urbig. However, the tables turned, and it was FC who went ahead. A fine move culminated in Joshua Schwirten producing a stunning strike into the top corner to send the travelling support wild.

Moments later, it was Genk’s turn to celebrate. A strong run into the box wasn’t stopped by the FC backline and the hosts were eventually able to set up Adnane Abid. He kept his cool to slot past Jonas Urbig and restore Genk’s advantage in the tie. The hosts had Jay-Dee Guesens to thank midway through the half as his dramatic clearance kept Schwirten from putting FC back in front.

The remainder of the first period saw a lack of chances for both teams, despite both pushing to try and get the crucial third goal.

Oyen seals the deal

The second-half began with promise and FC almost had the lead within five minutes of the restart. Marvin Obuz almost curled home from the edge of the area, only for Genk stopper Tobe Leysen to claw the ball out of the far corner. A hammer blow followed moments later, with Joshua Schwirten forced off through injury. Six minutes later, a stunning Luca Oyen solo put Genk in the driving seat.

The remainder of the game saw Genk control possession, only going forward when the opportunity truly presented itself. Marvin Obuz did his utmost to try and fashion a way back into the game, although his late run and shot was denied by a brave Genk block. The late fightback didn’t materialise, and the under-19s are now left to focus on their league campaign. Genk added a third late on through a Guesens penalty.
