Shortly before the return to pre-season on 8th August, FC Frauen have confirmed five important contract extensions. Francesca Calò, Sabrina Horvat, Amber Barrett, Sonja Giraud and Johanna Tietge will remain with FC. Previous to the current set of extensions, nine players from last year’s squad had committed their future to FC. Along with that, Mandy Islacker, Lena Lotzen, Sharon Beck, Anja Plfuger Marith Müller-Prießen and Manon Klett have joined the club.
Head coach, Sascha Glass said: “It was important for us to put together a team that is in the position to be promoted back to the Bundesliga. A huge compliment must go to our sporting director, Nicole Bender, who got stuck straight into work straight after the relegation.”
Francesca Calò (25) and Sabrina Horvat (23) joined from SV Werder Bremen in summer 2019 and directly became first-team regulars in defence. Johanna Tietge (24) arrived in January 2020. Glass said: “All three defenders are young and have potential to develop. They stabilise our defence, have super personalities and a great outlook. We are really pleased that they are staying with us. Their extensions show that they feel comfortable in Köln and at FC.”
Amber Barrett (24) and Sonja Giraud (25) will both be playing up front for FC next season. Barrett is an Irish international, while Giraud played in both Sweden and the USA before coming to Köln. Glass added: “Amber and Sonja give us more options in attack and are different types of strikers. Amber is quick and can finish well, Sonja is physical, can hold the ball up well and is a force up front. It’s nice to be able to keep both here.”
