Match Preview: FC Bayern Munich

FC host the Champions

1. FC Köln will host German champions FC Bayern Munich in the last home match of a bitter season.

Survive somehow. That was the expectation for then-interim head coach Stefan Ruthenbeck as he took a squad with six U21 players to face FC Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. With injuries piled up to the top, right-back Lukas Klünter got the start as FC’s lone striker against Germany’s most dominant team. FC withstood the pressure from the record holders for about 60 minutes until Robert Lewandowski got his name on the scoresheet. 1. FC Köln even had a chance to equalize late in the match, but Klünter’s strike was excellently parried away by Bayern goalkeeper Tom Starke.

Chance for a Double

The first trophy is already in the bag. Bayern had weeks to spare as they wrapped up the Bundesliga title. The Double is still a viable goal, with Bayern set to face SG Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB-Pokal final on the 19th of May. The Triple, however is out of reach. Following a 1-2 loss at home against Real Madrid, Bayern could only manage a 2-2 draw in the return leg as the German champions were knocked out of the UFA Champions League in the semifinal.

What the coaches say

Stefan Ruthenbeck (1. FC Köln): “I have almost all players on board. Leo Bittencourt’s fitness situation is still up in the air. I will field a competitive team that wants to win.”

Jupp Heynckes (FC Bayern Munich): “It is always a great experience to play in Cologne. I wish FC the best and hope they are promoted back to the Bundesliga as soon as possible. Our aim on Saturday is to pick up three points and maintain our strong form.”
