6:0 win

FC into DFB-Pokal second round

1. FC Köln progressed into the second-round of the DFB-Pokal thanks to a 6:0 win over VSG Altglienicke on Saturday afternoon at RheinEnergieSTADION. Elvis Rexhbecaj’s brace was the highlight from the victory.

3:0 lead at the break

The opening exchanges were back and forth, with Altglienecke happy to press FC high up the pitch having already gone through a handful of games this season. Patrick Breitkreuz had the first real chance of the game for the capital club, though his strong drive going narrowly over the crossbar from the edge of the area. It was from there, however, where Gisdol’s men got a hold of the game.

After Benno Schmitz had been given the chance to move down the right hand side, he managed to break into the box and was brought down by Tim Häußler. Jonas Hector stepped up from 12 yards and managed to find a way past Leon Bätge in goal to give FC the lead. There was a moment of controversy 10 minutes later, as Christian Skoda’s tackle on Schmitz forced him off. Dr. Martin Thomsen opted for yellow instead of red.

Marco Höger came on to replace Schmitz although Timo Horn was rarely troubled in the first-half. His save from Linus Meyer was a rare moment where the FC stopper was called into action. There was time for two late goals at the end of the half for Markus Gisdol’s men. Elvis Rexhbecaj coolly converted a Jonas Hector pass before Rafael Czichos headed in Salih Özcan’s corner.

Another three goals in second-half

The second period began with two changes for Altglienicke, and a chance for either side. Jorge Meré’s volley from a corner slipped wide of the mark, before Timo Horn made a vital stop with his foot to deny Tolcay Cigerci’s one-on-one opportunity. Salih Özcan’s spectacular bicycle kick went narrowly over the crossbar as Tugay Uzan also shot wide of goal after a strong run.

Any remaining hope of a comeback was cut short after the hour mark. Elvis Rexhbecaj was on hand to capitalise after pinball in the box, smashing home from the penalty spot to get his second of the game. A fifth would follow five minutes later, as Salih Özcan headed home from Rexhbecaj’s corner to grab a deserved goal of his own.

The latter stages saw FC control the ball and the chances, though it was Altglienicke who were inches away from a stunning strike. Paul-Vincent Manske had only just come off the bench and cracked the crossbar with a superb volley from range. However, it would be Markus Gisdol’s side who scored the final goal. Tim Lemperle pressed Bätge into a mistake, and Dominick Drexler finished into an empty net.
