3-1 win in the Capital

FC oust Hertha

After a long drought 1. FC Köln won their second round DFB-Pokal match against Hertha BSC with a score of 3-1 (2-0). Zoller took the lead in the first half, which was extended by Maroh before halftime. In the second half Clemens decided the match.

Peter Stöger made 3 changes to his starting eleven: Tim Handwerker, Frederik Sorensen and Jannes Horn were brought on right from the start, which meant a break for Yuya Osako, Pawel Olkowski and Konstantin Rausch.

Cautious start

It was the hosts that controlled the opening minutes, but Berlin needed set pieces to approach the FC goal. Plattenhardt had a pair of free kicks, and the second of these forced Horn to fist the ball away (21’).  Hertha were more target-oriented in their passing and Salomon Kalou tested Horn from an acute angle and was denied by the Horn as well (31’).

Zoller scores – Maroh extends

35 minutes into the match, Bittencourt received the ball in midfield and crossed the ball in accurately. The winger found Guirassy in the box and the French striker flicked it on to his partner Simon Zoller, who scored from close range (35’). Thus, Cologne had their noses in front, but they did not stop attacking. Handwerker won a corner on the left, Jojic swung it in and Maroh tipped it in to increase the lead just before halftime (43’).

Clemens scores

The second half started with 2 chances for Zoller, but he first could not get past Jarstein (48’) and then missed the target (51’). 57 minutes into the match, Stöger brought on substitute Christian Clemens, which was a clever move. The home-grown player played a perfect pass into the feet of striker Zoller, whose lofted ball was denied by the post, but Clemens reacted best and converted the rebound easily (65’).

Stable FC

Berlin could not produce more than corners at this stage, but one of those led to their consolation goal: Plattenhardt delivered it, Rekik only hit the bar, but Stark was well-positioned and slotted it home (69’). The visitors defended cleverly throughout the rest of the match and even came close to scoring with several attempts from Clemens  (72’ & 77’). In the end, FC did well to hold onto the 2-goal lead.

After progressing into the next round of the cup, Stöger’s men next will visit Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, 28 October 2017 (15:30).
