1-0 via Meyer

FC run ends in Gelsenkirchen

1. FC Köln’s journey in the DFB-Pokal was halted in the round of 16 with the match ending 1-0 (0-0) in favour of the hosts. Germany international Max Meyer scored the goal of the night for FC Schalke 04 at the Veltins-Arena.

Pawel Olkowski rotated in for the injured Birk Risa. As a consequence, attacker Lukas Klünter was supported by youngster Chris Führich up front

Organized FC

1. FC Köln put in a organized defensive performance right from the start. The hosts dictated the match and controlled it with their passing in midfield. Schalke needed 30 minutes to shoot on target for the first time, but it was not enough to trouble Timo Horn in the FC goal. The hosts dominated possession (64%) against a stable Cologne defense. As the attacks were rare, Ruthenbeck reacted and Christian Clemens replaced Olkowski (39’) before the two sides went in deadlocked.

Max Meyer scores

Schalke remained the superior side in the second half and created scoring opportunities. First, the Moroccan midfielder Harit hit the side-netting early (54’). At the hour mark, it was Timo Horn who had to save his team with a brilliant reaction to deny a Nastasic shot from close range (62’). Then Max Meyer cleverly headed a Oczipka corner into the bottom far corner to snatch the deserved lead for Schalke (63’).

Debut for youngster Goden

Being one goal down, Ruthenbeck brought on 2 fresh players: Marco Höger and Kevin Goden. For the 18-year old, it was his professional debut and 3 minutes later he forced Fährmann to make a fingertip save (74’). In the closing minutes, Horn stood tall against Embolo as the substitute could not beat him from 6 yards (80’). The best shot for FC was taken by Heintz, who just missed the target from range (86’). In the end it was not enough as FC’s run in the domestic cup came to an end.
