City Council decides for FC plans

FC say: Thank you, Köln!

The Köln City Council have voted in favour of 1. FC Köln’s plans to expand Geißbockheim. FC thanks the administration and politicians for their constructive support during proceedings.

Six years after the first plans, the proceedings for expanding the RheinEnergieSportpark has been brought to a close. A clear majority in the City Council voted for the plans on Thursday. The decision is a crucial step in the FC's plan to create three artificial pitches for the youth teams and a joint performance centre for youth and first-team players at Geißbockheim.

FC President Dr. Werner Wolf said: “The administration and politicians of Köln have proven to be a reliable partner and, after weighing up the alternatives in a transparent, detailed and also controversial process, have clearly committed themselves to Geißbockheim as the location for 1. FC Köln. We are very grateful. This decision is not only an important signal for FC. I congratulate our employees and all partners involved, who have been working persistently, professionally and with commitment on this topic for FC.”

FC managing director Alexander Wehrle said: “We have received a lot of support over the past few years, but also contradiction. This is part of such a project and is completely legitimate. The compromises we have made with administration and politicians are good for all sides: for FC, for the sports city of Köln and its citizens, but also for nature and climate protection, which will benefit hugely through the compensation measures financed by us in Grünzug West. In the end, the decision was made by the elected representatives and that is how it should be.”

FC managing director Horst Heldt said: “For our club, especially for the children and teenagers, the parents and employees in the FC youth academy, this decision is a sign of progress. We have a perspective in this unique location and we have our city's backing for it. We are extremely pleased and it will give us a boost.”

1. FC Köln would like to thank…

  • the employees and heads of department in the responsible offices, who have been carrying out the process on behalf of politics for six years with a high degree of professionalism and the required level of objectivity.
  • the district government that initiated the deviation process, which was decided in the regional council
  • the fractions of the CDU, SPD and FDP who critically but constructively followed the process and made compromises – and for sticking consequently with those compromises
  • Fan-Projekt 1991 e.V. and all the fans, members and citizens, who made an effort for the FC’s future at Geißbockheim
  • the City Sports Association, the Bunten Liga and all other athletes who see and support our plans as an opportunity for the sports city of Köln
  • our neighbours from shooting and sports clubs, allotments and the forest kindergarten for solution-oriented discussions
  • all citizens and politicians, also in initiatives and from other groups, who have maintained an open and fair exchange despite conflicting views

1. FC Köln appeal to the critics of the project to respect the decision of the elected representatives in the sense of representative, urban democracy. FC President Dr. Werner Wolf said: “Of course it is possible to sue against council decisions. We are well prepared for such a case, especially due to the successful goal deviation process. However, I hope that with this clear vote by the Council and in a common spirit, we can bring the project to a respectful and factual conclusion. ”
