0-3 loss against Hoffenheim

FC succumb to defeat

1. FC Köln disappointed in their home match against TSG Hoffenheim in a 0-3 defeat (0-1). Dennis Geiger took the early lead for the visitors before Sandro Wagner’s brace decided the match in the second half.

After his team’s impressive win against BATE Borisov, Peter Stöger made 2 changes to his line-up. First, Yuya Osako started instead of Christian Clemens. Moreover, Pawel Olkowski defended on the right as Frederik Sorensen was given a break.

Geiger scores early

The match started with 2 offensive sides. Several seconds into the match, Germany international Kerem Demirbay bent the initial shot wide for the visitors. 3 minutes later Olkowski tested Baumann from range as well. It was also the more active side that scored first: Hoffenheim’s Amiri entered the box on the left and found Geiger at the near post. The midfielder volleyed the ball into the back of the net with his second touch (9’).

Superior guests

Stöger’s men nearly equalized through Bittencourt whenthe midfielder made a strong run on the left flank (12’). Hoffenheim managed to calm the match down again and then put permanent pressure on Horn’s goal. The in-form FC keeper saved his team facing several dangerous TSG finishes. The best chance for Hoffenheim was wasted by Mark Uth, who could not get past the keeper in a one-on-one situation (32’). Cologne did not produce more than a Lehmann shot from range (34’). A minute later, Maroh had to tackle Geiger in the nick of time (35’).

Osako hits the post

In the closing minutes of the second half the FC fans were hoping for better as 1. FC Köln had some good opportunities. However, Osako unluckily hit the post from 24 yards (41’), Rausch’s powerful attempt was blocked (42’), and Guirassy headed the ball over the bar (44’). Thus, FC were one goal down at the break.

Disputable penalty for TSG

The match continued in the same manner and with no changes in personnel. As a result, the guests had the first promising scene, but Horn denied the former FC player Uth (53’). 2 minutes later, referee Deniz Aytekin pointed at the spot. Disputably, he confirmed his decision even after watching the scene and Sandro Wagner finally converted clinically (57’).

FC waste chances – Hoffenheim score

Stöger reacted by bringing on 2 substitutes: Milos Jojic and Tim Handwerker for Özcan and Zoller. Hence, Bittencourt switched to the right flank and instantly set the scene for Olkowski with a fine delivery, but the Pole could not beat Baumann from 16 yards (72’). FC put pressure on the TSG defense now and Jojic could not make use of a perfect Guirassy cross (75’). A minute later, the Frenchman himself had a great opportunity, but missed the right post with a volley (76’). Then against the run of play, Hoffenheim decided the match as Sandro Wagner converted a Kramaric cross (80’). Finally, Hoffenheim managed to hold onto the result and carried away a deserved away win.
