Pre-season 2019-20

FC unlucky in Southampton defeat

1. FC Köln fell to defeat in their final pre-season friendly against Southampton at St. Mary's. Danny Ings' early penalty and a Pierre-Emile Højbjerg goal gave the hosts the win on Saturday afternoon, but there were still positives to be taken from the FC performance.

A tale of two penalties

Things didn’t get off to the best possible start for FC in Southampton, as they fell behind in the first four minutes. Rafael Czichos was adjudged to have fouled Che Adams in the penalty area, and Jon Moss pointed to the penalty spot. Danny Ings was the man entrusted with the spot-kick, and he sent Timo Horn the wrong way to give the Saints the lead.

Beierlorzer’s men responded well and with purpose. Marco Höger managed to find Jhon Cordoba in behind the Southampton defence, but the Colombian was kept out by a strong save from Angus Gunn. Timo Horn was required to make a fine stop of his own moments later, denying Nathan Redmond’s one-on-one with a strong foot.

As the game begin to level out, Southampton were handed another somewhat generous penalty. This time, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg was upended in the box by Kingsley Ehizibue. Danny Ings was again the man to step up from 12 yards, but his attempt to chip the ball down the middle was easily saved by Timo Horn. That somewhat killed the flow of the match, as it ebbed into half-time.

Clinical Southampton

Both teams made changes at the break as Achim Beierlorzer brought on Kingsley Schindler for Marco Höger, as Louis Schaub moved into the middle of the park. Southampton swapped Danny Ings for Michael Obafemi. Schindler would have the opening chance of the half, too. However, his effort from 10 yards was well over the crossbar from a difficult bouncing ball.

A strong start to the second period continued as Louis Schaub cut a cross back to Anthony Modeste on the edge of the six-yard box. Yet he couldn’t quite direct his effort on target while slightly off balance. Southampton would then punish FC for those missed chances, as the dangerous Che Adams picked out Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in the middle to finish into an open net.

The remainder of the game was summed up by fouls on both sides, and there was a lack of rhythm on both sides. Plenty of changes only served to further disrupt that, with Kingsley Schindler’s blocked shot and a free-kick from Sofiane Boufal the only real openings of note.

FC’s next game signals the beginning of competitive football in the 2019-20 season, as they face off against SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. The game kick-offs at 18:30 CEST on Sunday 11th August.
