1:3 loss at home

FC valiant in Dortmund defeat

1. FC Köln put in a superb performance against Borussia Dortmund on Friday evening at the RheinEnergieSTADION, but came up just short in a 1:3 defeat. Dominick Drexler had given FC the lead, but a second-half salvo from Dortmund saw them come away with the three points.

Achim Beierlorzer made three changes to the FC side that lost in Wolfsburg. Jorge Meré, Marco Höger and Florian Kainz dropped to the bench as Sebastian Bornauw made his FC debut, Ellyes Skhiri made his first start and Jhon Cordoba returned from suspension.

Lucien Favre, on the other hand, opted for just one alteration after the win over Augsburg. Roman Bürki replaced Marwin Hitz in goal, as the first-choice stopper returned between the sticks.

FC ahead at the break

The first 15 minutes of the first-half saw both sides evenly matched in their play. While Mats Hummels headed over and Jhon Cordoba narrowly missed an Anthony Modeste cross, the two teams found it hard to create any real chances of note. It was a midfield battle to begin with, and Ellyes Skhiri and Birger Verstraete were more than holding their own against Axel Witsel and Julian Weigl.

Jhon Cordoba and Anthony Modeste then both went close as the pair had shots blocked midway through the first period. It was unlikely, but it would FC’s two central midfielders who combined to give Köln the lead. Verstraete’s corner was headed on by Skhiri at the back post, and Dominick Drexler stooped to nod in and give FC a half-time lead.

Achim Beierlorzer’s men fended off the late pressure from Borussia Dortmund, who had a set of dangerous set-pieces towards the break. FC did continue to look dangerous on the break, and had it not been for a slip from Anthony Modeste, he would have been through on goal once more. That’s how it remained until the break.

Dortmund turn things around

FC picked up where they left off after the restart, and continued to press BVB hard. Jhon Cordoba’s cross almost crept in at the near post, and the Colombian’s header from the resulting corner was deflected narrowly over. As for Borussia Dortmund, Mats Hummels had their first opening of the half. His shot, however, was comfortably off target.

Dortmund’s first real chance of the game followed soon after. A smart turn and shot inside the box from Paco Alcacer draw a fantastic save from Timo Horn. Horn came to the fore moments later, and managed to flick the Spaniard’s effort into the air from close range. The threat remained, but Rafael Czichos managed to clear the ball off the line.

The visitors’ pressure eventually paid off, and they managed to find an equaliser. A quick corner caught the FC defence off guard, and the ball eventually found a way to Jadon Sancho, who managed to pick out the far bottom corner from 16 yards.

FC kept battling and continued to press and push BVB on the ball. Unfortunately, Dortmund went ahead right at the death. Lukasz Piszczek managed to get into space on the right hand side and found a way to cut the ball to the back post. Achraf Hakimi arrived at the back post to nod in and turn the game in BVB’s favour. Dortmund then found a late third through Paco Alcacer, as FC went in search of an equaliser.

FC’s next game will see them travel to SC Freiburg on Saturday afternoon, in the hope of getting the first three points on the board.
