Match Preview: FC Schalke 04

Finding their form

1. FC Köln resume the 2016/17 Bundesliga campaign on Sunday with a home fixture against FC Schalke 04.

FC Schalke 04 did not get their 2016/17 Bundesliga campaign off to the greatest start. Five consecutive losses at the start of the season included a 1-3 home defeat at the hands of 1. FC Köln. It was hardly the kind of beginning that was expected of the newly arrived Director of Sport Christian Heidel and Head Coach Markus Weinzierl. Although results started to improve from this point, ending the year in 11th place did not meet the ambitions of the Royal Blues.

The January transfer window meant business time for Schalke. Additions were made in the form of Holger Badstuber (Bayern Munich), Daniel Caligiuri (VfL Wolfsburg), and Guido Burgstaller (1. FC Nuremberg). The latter has scored twice already in the league for Schalke and has played an integral role in picking up two wins and a draw out of their first four Bundesliga matches. Schalke also disposed of Sandhausen in the DFB-Pokal with a 4-1 score, while their most recent fixture on the road against PAOK in the UEFA Europa League was a successful 3-0 victory as well.

FC strong at home

Just when it seemed FC were getting over their early injury crisis, another blow hit the team: Leonardo Bittencourt will miss at least six weeks with a tendon tear in his left thigh. It is the latest chapter in a season filled with adversity. 1. FC Köln will no doubt feel the absence of Bittencourt on the pitch, but the objective for Sunday remains unchanged. FC have not lost at home in the 2016/17 season and need to go back to April of 2016 for their last league defeat at home. With Schalke finding their form in recent weeks, it will be a match to keep an eye out on Sunday night.
