1-0 against Wolfsburg

First victory of the season

1. FC Köln earned their first win of the season with a 1-0 (0-0) win at home against VfL Wolfsburg. Cologne born forward Christian Clemens scored the goal of the day in the second half.

1. FC Köln started with 2 youngsters: Chris Führich and Birk Risa. Moreover, Marco Höger and Konstantin Rausch returned to Stefan Ruthenbeck’s bench.

Stable FC defense

Two organized sides battling for the ball characterized the first half. The fearless 19-year-old FC winger Führich took the first shot, but it went wide (7’). The match changed as Cologne were more target-oriented in the closing minutes of the first half. Lukas Klünter broke through on the right wing, entered the box but was denied by goalkeeper Koen Casteels twice from an acute angle (34’). Defender Frederik Sorensen also had a promising shot but could not hit the top left corner (39’). As a consequence, the teams were deadlocked at the break.

Jojic hits the bar

The match continued in the second half with no changes in personnel. The first opportunity fell to FC. Jojic entered the penalty area from the right side, turned a defender and aimed at the top far corner, but Koen Casteels tipped the ball against the woodwork with a brilliant save (49’). 59 minutes into the match, Höger made his comeback. The midfielder took a shot instantly but missed the target (60’).

Clemens strikes

Risa had to be substituted and replaced by Christian Clemens. The winger knocked a long ball into the path of Milos Jojic. The Serb pushed it forward in his 50th Bundesliga match for the club and passed it back to Clemens, who netted at the end of a remarkable run (67’).

Horn stands tall

FC did not stop attacking and were of course given more space by the visitors now. On a counter Klünter was in a one-on-one with Casteels, but this time he hit the left post from a very acute angle (76’). Nevertheless, Wolfsburg tried everything to come back. Gomez won the ball in the box and somehow managed to direct it goalwards, but his finish was cleared by a defender (77’). A Minute later Bruma volleyed the ball on target and was denied by the in-form FC keeper Timo Horn (78’). The FC Nr. 1 also saved his team with an outstanding reaction against Germany international striker Gomez in added time, as FC held onto the first league win of the season.
