Goals from Amber Barrett and Anja Pfluger ensured that Sascha Glass’ side began the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga Süd season with a win against Saarbrücken. It was a battle to earn the three points but a deserved victory as well, as the constant second-half pressure finally broke down the visitors’ rear-guard action.
Barrett grabbed her first goal of the season to give FC the lead. While the 24-year-old was happy to have started the campaign well personally, but team success stood above all: “It wasn’t a bad way to start the season with the goal, but the most important thing were the three points in a difficult game to start off. We were very happy to get the win.”
Barrett added, “I don’t think we’ll complain if we can get the same result again, we’ll definitely take that. However, we have high expectations where we want to improve all the time. I think we have players in the squad where we can all improve on the performance. That said, it was the win that mattered.”
While FC have already had their season opener, it will be the first competitive fixture of the campaign for FC Bayern II. Bayern were crowned 2. Bundesliga champions no less than two seasons ago. “We might have a slight advantage because we have already had our first competitive game. That is always something difficult; the nerves are there before the first match. That could be the case for Bayern at the weekend. It will still be a tough game and one that is difficult to call,” said Barrett.
