Matchday 13

Frauen face Hoffenheim in final game of the year

1. FC Köln Frauen welcome TSG Hoffenheim to the Südstadion at the weekend as they aim to end 2019 on a high. After the postponement of the crucial clash against MSV Duisburg, FC are keen to impress before the Winter Break.

FC Frauen have been battling hard against staying out of the drop zone this season and a win on Sunday would give them the chance to jump ahead of Duisburg and into 10th. While FC have been unlucky this season at several points in games, they have been more than promising in most matches. Very rarely have the Frauen been completely out of any game and some tight results in the previous weeks have proven just that.

The goals have been well shared out across the team, with eight different goalscorers this term. Karoline Kohr, Eunice Beckmann and Lucia Ondrusova lead the way with three each. With Hoffenheim having plenty of options going forward, the likes of Rachel Rinast and Francesca Calo will be tasked with keeping the visitors from Sinsheim at bay.

Hoffenheim have been the team to break up the big two of Wolfsburg and FC Bayern this season, and sit just three points behind the Wolves in second place. They have been spearheaded by Nicole Billa this season, who has 14 goals in 12 games and ably assisted by the likes of Isabella Hartig and Tabea Waßmuth.

While head coach, Willi Breuer recognises the challenge ahead, he’s keen to end the year on a positive note: “It’ll be tough to win the game, especially given that they’re second in the league at the moment. It’s the last game of the year and we want to give everything for the fans. We want to give them a positive impression before we head into the Winter Break.”

Breuer will be without Kristina Hild (Halsentzündung) and there are doubts over the fitness of forward, Sonja Giraud. Otherwise, FC have a fully fit team for the game.  The FC head coach is keen to stay tight and focused: “It’s important that we stay alert and pay attention at all times. We’ve got to stay compact and keep it that we, and then we’ll be better moving forward as a unit.”

Kick-off is at 14:00 CET on Sunday afternoon, with the game being played at the Südstadion.
