    FC Season Review Part IX

    Frustration and Hope

1. FC Köln just played one of the most successful seasons in recent history. Part IX of the season review looks at the month of April.

Just one win out of six matches does not sound like the best of results, but FC had reason to be hopeful by the time April came to a close.

Bundesliga

The month of April began with a last-minute loss away to Hamburg. Milos Jojic had equalized at FC, but Lewis Holtby struck in injury time to secure all three points for the host. It was the second time FC lost in Hamburg in the 2016/17 season following the February loss in the DFB-Pokal.

FC immediately bounced back in a midweek fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt, where Jojic extended his good form with a well-taken goal to lead the team to a win in front of the watchful eyes of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

A derby loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach (2-3) was particularly difficult for FC fans, but a poor showing in Augsburg (1-2) the following week made it almost worse. FC appeared to bounce back against Hoffenheim, only for Kerem Demirbay to score a last-minute equalizer (1-1). This meant FC took just 1 point out of three matches.

A dip in form appeared to come in the most inopportune time as FC had to gear up for an away fixture in Dortmund. However, a strong defensive showing and some impressive stops from Timo Horn meant FC were able to keep the clean sheet in a goalless draw.

Standings

FC ended April in eighth place of the standings. It was the worst position all season.
