Thoughts after Mainz

Gisdol: “We can live with a point”

Following the 2:2 draw against Mainz, managing director Horst Heldt, head coach Markus Gisdol and Toni Leistner spoke to NetCologne FC-TV and gave their thoughts on the match.

Horst Heldt on…

…the shared spoils: “The draw is a fair result, because Mainz played well and didn’t let up. It was a very attacking game from both teams – there were phases were we were better, and phases where we were lucky. When you’re 2:0 up, you obviously want to win the game. But a draw is important for us. We’ve managed to keep the distance between ourselves and a direct opponent. No-one knows exactly where they stand after the break. Playing without fans made it especially hard. Still, both teams gave their best. It was an intensive and good football match. We can build on that. Therefore, we can live with the draw.”

…the successful restart to the season: “I’m pleased that the politicians decided that we could continue with our jobs – just like many other people are now able to do. We have a lot of critics in Germany but around the world, people are amazed. “Made in Germany” was something special for a long time and, I think that with the support of a lot of people and the politicians, it’s a very thorough concept. If we keep holding ourselves to it, I’m optimistic that things will work out. Even when it’s without question, that the team and myself missed the fans.”

Markus Gisdol: “We know where we’ve come from. Therefore we should be modest and a point against Mainz still gives us a good feeling, even when we would have liked to have won. We didn’t control the game well enough and we gave our opponent too much room. But it’s not easy after such a long break. The boys gave it everything. We can live with a point.”

Toni Leistner: “It was an okay performance from us. The fact that we hadn’t played in eight weeks, the intensity was still very high. At the end, there was a little missing and you seen that the preparation was really short. Overall, we can be satisfied even when we weren’t concentrated enough after going 2:0 up. Next week against Düsseldorf, we want to take the chance to extend our gap to the relegation places.”
