Thoughts after the game

Gisdol: “We can take a lot from the game”

After the 4:1 defeat against Bayern Munich, NetCologne FC-TV spoke with Timo Horn, Markus Gisdol and Horst Heldt.

Timo Horn: “The game started badly. Bayern started like a house on fire. We didn’t win our tackles. When you give players like that so much room, it’s like playing cat and mouse. We seen that in the opening stages. Afterwards, it got better. We wanted to be more active in the second-half when it came to going forward. We were missing a bit of luck, especially with the disallowed goal. When that goes in, then the stadium is lifted and you go again. Unfortunately, everything didn’t work out today, and then it’s difficult against such a world-class team. The opponents against which we need to take points from are coming in the next few weeks. In the past weeks, we often had the problem that we weren’t completely awake from the start. Today, we played against a team that are fighting for the title and that are under pressure. After the results yesterday, they wanted to finish the game as soon as possible. Unfortunately, that was the case.”

Markus Gisdol: “We’ve got to look at the game in two halves. In the first half, Bayern exploited our gaps well. You seen, that we’re still developing. Bayern are a team that currently have an absolutely top level of performance – we’ve seen that in Europe, too. We were too passive, weren’t courageous enough to push forward to try and get a foothold. Bayern showed us that. The boys obviously didn’t find it great either, with how we played in the first half. I didn’t either. In the break, we checked it off and wanted to do better in the second-half. And that’s exactly what we did. I believe that we can take a lot out of this game for the coming weeks. The positive is: such an opponent shows what gaps we have. It hurts, but we can also work to show how well we can turn things around in the second-half.”

Horst Heldt: “There were probably one or two fans who hadn’t got into their seats before it was one or two-nil. When everything clicks with Bayern, when they’re concentrated and aggressive with their individual class, then it’s bloody hard. Unfortunately, that’s what happened and we didn’t get a hold of things – but Bayern did it brilliantly. After 12 minutes, we were three-nil down. That’s sobering, when you want to try and get things under control from the start. We knew that we needed a perfect day to hurt Bayern. We did that in the second-half, we collected ourselves and delivered a good game. It’s a good sign, that our fans honoured that. We must speak about the start of the game and then take the positives from a good performance in the second-half. We played ourselves chances, scored and had two disallowed for offside. The performance in the second-half was good. We’ve got to build on that. We grow from such games.”
