70 years of 1. FC Köln

Inaugural Bundesliga Champions

The 1960 final sees 1. FC Köln suffer a 2-3 loss at the hands of Hamburger SV. Two years later, Hans Schäfer and his team of Billy Goats are back in the final. The stage is set in Berlin with an attendance of 83,212 as FC face 1. FC Nuremberg. 14 years after founding President Franz Kremer asked the question, “Do you want to become German champions with me,” FC secure the dream following goals from Schäfer, Pott, and a brace from Habig.

Bundesliga Champions

The 24 August 1963 sees 1. FC Köln play 1. FC Saarbrücken in the very first season of the Bundesliga. The result is a comfortable 2-0 victory as FC enter the history books, alongside FC Schalke 04, as the first leaders of the Bundesliga. FC continue to dominate the competition and secure the title of the inaugural Bundesliga season with a 5-2 home win against Borussia Dortmund.

Hennes II. and the DFB-Pokal

Hennes II. arrives on 26 November 1966 shortly after the passing of the original Hennes. His crowning moment arrives on 9 June 1968. 1. FC Köln finds itself in the final of the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) against VfL Bochum. Although the opponent strikes first in the 37th minute, FC come back through goals from Rühl and Löhr to secure a 4-1 victory and the trophy.
