Match Preview: Hoffenheim

Nagelsmann’s well-oiled machine

TSG Hoffenheim are coming off the most successful season in club history. Julian Nagelsmann’s team set a new record to begin the current campaign, but their form has dipped in recent weeks.

It was a season of new records. TSG Hoffenheim achieved their most successful season in club history in 2016/17. 16 wins, 14 draws, and just 4 defeats (none of which came at home) saw TSG end the season as the fourth best team in the Bundesliga. That momentum was taken into the current season as well, with Julian Nagelsmann’s team picking up 14 points in their first six league matches. The impressive stretch also included a 2-0 win against the champions, Bayern Munich.

Hoffenheim are getting the job done mainly as a result of their offensive firepower. Depth is of no concern for a team that features the likes of Sandro Wagner, Andrej Kramaric, Adam Szalai, Serge Gnabry, and Mark Uth in their arsenal. The latter, who happens to be a youth team product of 1. FC Köln, has started the season in fine form with five goals and one assist.

Despite the positive headlines, the situation at Hoffenheim is not entirely perfect. Their place in in the Champions League evaporated when Liverpool knocked them out in the qualifiers. Meanwhile, SV Werder Bremen knocked them out of the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Four games without a win in the league has also seen Hoffenheim slip down the standings of the Bundesliga. There is no doubt Nagelsmann still has one of the most talented teams in Germany, but recent form indicates a crack in the armor for FC to attack.
