FC President, Dr. Werner Wolf said: “We want to have continuity in the position of sporting director and are convinced that this will be the case with Horst Heldt. Since he joined in November, he has successfully managed to turn things around under difficult conditions. With his experience, his ability to work in a team and his clarity by analysis and decision-making, he brings us everything that will put FC on a good path for the middle and long-term. He identifies completely with 1. FC Köln, works well with Alexander Wehrle and also with all of the councils. We are therefore very happy, that we were able to agree on continuing our work together.”
Horst Heldt said: “FC is my club. It makes me proud to work for this club with the entire team at Geißbockheim. We achieved our goal over the past months – but that is just the first step. FC has big challenges in all areas as the consequences of the Corona crisis. I can’t wait to get stuck into them and to help establish 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga for the long-term. For this path, trust and togetherness are the keys. Therefore, the trust of the board means a lot to me and I will do everything in the coming years to justify that.”
Horst Heldt was born in Königswinter in 1969 and started his professional career at 1. FC Köln. His managing career began in 2006 with VfB Stuttgart where – in his four-and-a-half years at the club as sporting director – he guided them to the Bundesliga title in 2007. From 2010 to 2016, Heldt worked for FC Schalke 04 and won the DFB-Pokal as well as the DFL-Supercup, all whilst leading the club into the Champions League. Afterwards, he was at Hannover 96 for around two years. Since 19th November 2019, Horst Heldt has been sporting director at 1. FC Köln.
