Matchday 10

Number crunch: Away against Fortuna

Time to take on Fortuna. 1. FC Köln make the short trip up the Rhein to face Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sunday afternoon. There will be no love lost despite the long wait for another meeting.

A long, long time ago...

It is 8298 days since Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1. FC Köln last met in a Bundesliga match. That was on 14th February 1997, as FC came out 2:0 winners thanks to Toni Polster’s strike and a Jörg Bach own goal.

FC haven’t lost in Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga since 1983. Despite the defeat on Matchday 2 of the 1983-84 campaign, Rinus Michels’ side went on to finish in sixth and earn a place in the UEFA Cup.

1. FC Köln haven’t lost in their last eight Bundesliga meetings against Fortuna Düsseldorf. The longest run against any of the current Bundesliga teams.

There has just been one hat-trick in the 44 Bundesliga meetings between the sides. That was scored by Klaus Allofs. That happened back in 1986, when FC went on to win 4:0. Thomas Allofs got the opening goal that day.

The last two meetings in the DFB-Pokal between the two teams proved to be in the final. FC came out on top in 1978, before Fortuna were crowned cup winners in 1980. Bernd Cullmann managed to score in both games.

Against no other Bundesliga club have FC earned a better point per game average (1.7) and goals per game (2) than against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Only Gladbach (24) have had to wait longer than FC (21) when it comes to winning a penalty in the Bundesliga.

Headers, late goals and cards

This game will see the two top teams in the league face off when it comes to scoring from headers. FC and Fortuna Düsseldorf are the only two sides to have scored five times from headers this season.

FC have scored 44% of their goals in the final 15 minutes of Bundesliga games this season. That’s a number that can only be matched by Union Berlin.

Despite the nature of the game, there has been just one solitary red card in the 44 Bundesliga meetings between the two teams. A total of 62 yellow cards averages out at less than two per game.
