Matchday 8

Number crunch: Home against Paderborn

Back at home, at long last. Paderborn proved to be a tricky opponent last year for FC – but 1. FC Köln are keen to get that first home win. Here are 10 numbers to get you ready for the game.

FC are the only team in the Bundesliga that have scored more than half of their goals with their head. Three of the five goals scored by Achim Beierlorzer’s men have come through headers.

From all 18 Bundesliga teams, Paderborn have been fouled the least per game. On Average, Paderborn are fouled 10.1 times per match. On the contrary, FC have been fouled 13.1 times per game – the joint-fourth most along with Bayern Munich.

Sunday’s game will see the only two teams who haven’t managed to pick up a point at home in the Bundesliga thus far go head to head.

Kingsley Ehizibue is the fastest Bundesliga player of all-time. The FC right-back managed to record a speed of 35.85 km/h against Schalke – beating Kingsley Coman’s record from a week before.

Cauly Oliveira Souza made 72 appearances for FC’s youth academy, but never made it into the first-team. In his first game in the RheinEnergieSTADION, he scored the opening goal in Duisburg’s 2:1 win.

Anthony Modeste scored the last time the two teams met competitively. It was his first goal since returning to FC and came just four minutes after his substitution. There were 652 days between the two goals.

Goals galore, or none at all?

Five goals in the opening 15 minutes mean that Paderborn have scored more goals in the opening quarter of an hour than any other Bundesliga team.

With the exception of Borussia Mönchengladbach (20) and SC Freiburg (22), no Bundesliga team have conceded more goals than Paderborn (19) in the first seven games this millennium.

Including the friendly last season, the three games against SC Paderborn produced 21 goals in 2018-19. In the 13 matches that the two have met, this accounts for over half of the goals scored (41).

1. FC Köln’s two games against SC Paderborn both ended nil-nil, meaning it is only the second Bundesliga pairing of all time to have never seen a goal. The other is VfB Leipzig against VfB Stuttgart, as both games ended goalless in the 1993-94 season.
