1. FC Köln: FC are keen to bounce back at the first time of asking following the defeat to TSG Hoffenheim last weekend. Previous to the loss, Markus Gisdol’s men had picked up four points. A win against FC Schalke 04 followed on from the 0:0 draw against Hertha BSC. It is the start of three games inside a week, and FC will want to start it on the right foot.
Arminia Bielefeld: Arminia had been on a decent run of form until Eintracht Frankfurt spoiled the party with a 5:1 win at the Bielefelder Alm. Beforehand, Uwe Neuhaus’ side had picked up seven points from nine to begin 2021. A 1:0 win over Hertha was followed up by a 0:0 draw against Hoffenheim, before a stunning 3:0 win against VfB Stuttgart at home.
Markus Gisdol: “Arminia are a very stable team. They have many close games and they are very disciplined. They are doing really well. Many underestimate that. It is not about the name of the team or if they just got promoted. If we want to win, we have to put in a good performance”
Uwe Neuhaus: “I don’t want to say who has more pressure in this game. We want to earn the three points and that is all that matters to us. The match against Köln earlier in the season is a nice memory but nothing more. That won’t play a role on Sunday.”
1. FC Köln: Markus Gisdol has suggested that things look good in regards to Emmanuel Dennis and Max Meyer being part of the squad against Bielefeld. Otherwise, the FC head coach said that it is too early to make a decision on Jonas Hector, Sava-Arangel Cestic and Rafael Czichos.
Arminia Bielefeld: Manuel Prietl, Andreas Voglsammer and Ristu Doan look set to be fit in time for the trip. Uwe Neuhaus' only decision will be who to leave at home and who to bring to Köln.
Ritsu Doan has shot to stardom this season with Arminia Bielefeld. The Japan international has three goals and three assists to his name since arriving in Ostwestfalen from PSV Eindhoven on loan. Doan has yet to miss a league game this season and his driving, dribbling style has attracted plenty of plaudits within the Bundesliga. The 22-year-old has been fouled the most of any player in the league, but he keeps bouncing back up and going again.
Arminia have the upper hand over FC when it comes to Bundesliga games between the two teams. The last top tier meeting in Müngersdorf ended in a draw, just one of only two in Bundesliga history. Arminia have won 12 in comparison to FC’s 11 in the top flight. The 12 matches in Köln between the two sides have produced 39 Bundesliga goals and there is yet to be a 0:0 when the pair have met.
