Matchday 27

Preview ahead of the home game against Fortuna

It's derby day with a difference on Sunday as 1. FC Köln host Fortuna Düsseldorf at the RheinEnergieSTADION. It's the beginning of a busy week, with this the first of three games in eight days. Here is the preview ahead of what will be hotly contested affair.

Form check

1. FC Köln: Despite the draw against Mainz, Markus Gisdol still boasts an incredible return from his 15 games in charge. 26 points, with 25 coming in the previous 12 fixtures, has pulled FC up and out of immediate relegation danger. However, the full focus is on securing survival as soon as possible and this game could prove to be another step in the right direction. A return to winning ways against Düsseldorf would be just the ticket in the first of three games in eight days.

Fortuna Düsseldorf: Fortuna have proven a tough nut to crack since Uwe Rösler took over at the helm. Despite picking up just one win in seven games, they’ve only been beaten once by Borussia Mönchengladbach. They would have hoped for more than just a point against Paderborn, though hitting the frame of the goal on four occasions didn’t help their cause. Improved tactically and as a footballing outfit, Fortuna will hope to get another one over on FC.

The managers have had their say

Markus Gisdol: “When I see Fortuna, I don't see a team that looks like they're playing against relegation. They've only lost one of their last seven games, they're a good team. It's a big challenge for us. They’re also very disciplined in a tactical sense and strong in the tackle.”

Uwe Rösler: “We’ve now had a full week of normal training and analysed Köln as well. We’ve worked on a match plan. When we put that into practice, we have a good chance to take something. We won’t change much tactically in comparison to the game against Paderborn. We want to get the ball, stay in possession and create chances from there.”

Squad update

1. FC Köln: Markus Gisdol confirmed on Friday that all players in the squad for the game against Mainz would be fit to face Fortuna. Marcel Risse won’t be in contention this weekend with a knee problem, while Ismail Jakobs will be in the squad once more.

Fortuna Düsseldorf: Aside from Kaan Ayhan’s absence at the centre of defence due to suspension, Rösler has all options available to him for Sunday’s fixture. Matthias Jörgensen is likely to start in his place, while Dawid Kownacki could return to the bench following his injury woes.

Opposition dangerman

Erik Thommy has been a man to cause FC problems when he has faced them. The winger has never dropped points against 1. FC Köln, having won all three fixtures when he’s been on the pitch. Not only that, he’s managed a goal and three assists in 168 minutes. The 25-year-old has enjoyed his best Bundesliga season to date, scoring five goals and assisting a further four. Quick and with an eye for goal, FC are well aware of the threat Thommy poses.

Refereeing team

This will be announced on the day of the game.
