Matchday 4

Preview ahead of the home game against Gladbach

It’s derby time. On Saturday, the 123rd Rheinderby between 1. FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach will take place. FC come into the game looking to make it back-to-back home derby wins for the first time since 2005.

Form check

1. FC Köln: Achim Beierlorzer’s men are up and running in the Bundesliga, and how. After battling performance against both VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund, Matchday 3 brought a first Bundesliga win for Beierlorzer as a manager. After going behind against Freiburg, Anthony Modeste and Ellyes Skhiri secured a dramatic comeback to give FC a huge boost heading into the international break and the derby day fixture.

Borussia Mönchengladbach: After a close-fought DFB-Pokal win over SV Sandhausen to start the season, Marco Rose’s side followed that up with a stalemate at home to FC Schalke 04. Their first league win of the campaign came with a promising 1:3 comeback win against 1. FSV Mainz 05, which saw Breel Embolo score his first goal for the club. Despite the Swiss forward scoring once more against Leipzig, they fell to a 3:1 defeat and will be keen to get back on track this weekend.

The managers have had their say

Achim Beierlorzer: I know that our fans will do absolutely to push us forward. Gladbach are a challenge, but we want to enjoy this game and do everything to come away with the points. The team knows that it's important for the fans and the city to invest absolutely everything in the derby.

Marco Rose: Köln have a lot of quick players and are very aggressive. We’re expecting that it will be a very intense game. There will be an extraordinary atmosphere on Saturday - we have to cope with it. For our fans, the game means a lot. Accordingly, we want to perform in Cologne.

Squad update

1. FC Köln: Aside from the injuries to Ismail Jakobs and Christian Clemens, all of the international players, Jhon Cordoba and Birger Verstraete returned to training during the week. Achim Beierlorzer confirmed this in his press conference on Thursday.

Borussia Mönchengladbach: Marco Rose has said that Matthias Ginter will be assessed in the final training session before the derby after he was substituted with rib problems during Germany’s win over Northern Ireland. Jonas Hofmann, Torben Müsel and Lars Stindl will all miss out with their respective injury problems.

Opposition dangerman

Alassane Plea is the main man when it comes to Gladbach’s front line. The Frenchman was the star last season, grabbing 12 goals and four assists in 34 games. Having already registered a goal and an assist in the first three games of this campaign, the 26-year-old has started as he means to go on. He now has fellow Frenchman, Marcus Thuram for company as a centre-forward and Breel Embolo in behind in an exciting attacking line.

  • Given FC’s new style of play, it’s not too much of a surprise that FC have attempted the most tackles per game in the Bundesliga this season (100). Achim Beierlorzer’s men have won an average of 22 per game, more than any other side.
  • FC average the most long balls per game in the Bundesliga (71). In contrast, Borussia Mönchengladbach average the least (47).
  • Of players to play in all three games this season, Nico Elvedi has the best pass success rate (94.8%) of all Bundesliga players. Jorge Meré leads the way for FC with 89%.

  • 1. FC Köln have played more competitive games against Borussia Mönchengladbach than anyone else. The game on Saturday will be the 123rd time that the two sides have met.
  • On the day of the game, it will be 23 years since FC’s biggest home win over Gladbach. Sunday Oliseh, Dorniel Munteanu, Ion Vladoiu and Toni Polster were all on target in the 4:0 win.
  • Despite everything surrounding the derby, there have just been four red cards in 88 Bundesliga games between the sides. All were for FC, all were in Gladbach.
