Fritz Walter Medal

Salih Özcan wins Gold

The German Football Association has recognized FC player Salih Özcan as the best player in his age class.

Salih Özcan is the best in his class. At least that is what the German Football Association (Deutsche Fußball Bund) believes after awarding Özcan with the gold medal in the U19 age group in the 2017 class. He is just the third 1. FC Köln player to win gold. In 2010 Timo Horn won the award in the U17 category, while Nina Ehegötz won it for the women’s division back in 2016. Yannick Gerhardt won silver in 2013 (U19), while his sister Anna won it just one year later. Reinhold Yabo won silver in back to back years behind Mario Götze (U17, 2009 and U18, 2010).

“It is a special honor for me to be recognized in this way. It confirms that I am on the right path. Now I want to continue to work hard and give everything to improve,” said Salih Özcan on his award. FC head coach Peter Stöger states: “We are very happy for Salih. His recognition makes us proud. It shows that we are not the only ones to believe in his talent, but that he has been able to show it outside of Cologne as well.”

Özcan has been a player of FC since 2007 and made his Bundesliga debut in last season’s 3-1 win against Schalke, in which he set up Simon Zoller’s goal. His debut also made him the 500th FC player to play for 1. FC Köln in a competitive match. He ended the season with 13 Bundesliga appearances and 2 matches in the DFB-Pokal. In addition, he has played in 38 matches for the German youth teams.
