Match Preview: FC Schalke 04

Schalke the favorites

1. FC Köln host FC Schalke 04 at the RheinEnergieSTADION on Sunday. Although Schalke are the favorites, the overall historical record favors FC.

FC Schalke 04 are flying high in the league this season and currently find themselves in second place of the Bundesliga standings. With an eight-point lead on fifth place, the securing of Champions League football for next season looks close to completion. With 24 consecutive matches with a goal scored and just 33 conceded overall (second-best in the league), Schalke look to be where the sun is shining. And yet, all is not well in the club from Gelsenkirchen. A midweek loss at home to Eintracht Frankfurt means Schalke will miss out on a berth in the DFB-Pokal final.

The record

Although Schalke come in as the favorites, history favors 1. FC Köln. In 118 competitive matches, FC have won 52, drawn 25, and lost 41. In fact, FC have more wins against Schalke than any other side in the Bundesliga with 36 wins.

What the coaches say

Stefan Ruthenbeck (1. FC Köln): “Schalke has a great squad. I am not surprised that they are among the top teams. Defensively they are particularly strong, but we will fight back and look to decide the match for ourselves.”

Domenico Tedesco (FC Schalke 04): “Cologne have shown on multiple occasions that they have not given up yet. They beat Leverkusen at home just a few weeks ago. I will have a full squad at my disposal.”

1. FC Köln Squad

Matthias Lehmann successfully underwent surgery on his elbow on Friday and will miss the rest of the season. Christian Clemens, Simon Zoller, and Sehrou Guirassy will also be out of action on Sunday.
