First round of the DFB-Pokal

Season start against Leher TS

The start to the Bundesliga is just one week away, which means it is time to begin the new season with the first round of the DFB-Pokal. 1. FC Köln will face Leher TS on Saturday for the first meeting between these two clubs in history.

Leher TS can look back at a long history: the club was founded back in 1898 in the Bremerhaven region in northern Germany. In recent years, the fifth division side has made a name for itself through the youth players that went on to become professionals. Andre Hahn (Hamburger SV), Gerrit Holtmann (1. FSV Mainz 05), and Terrence Boyd (SV Darmstadt 98) were all once part of the Leher youth sides.

The first team itself has not found as much success as they have in the previous season. A 9:8 win following penalty kicks in the Bremer Landespokal final booked a direct berth in the DFB-Pokal for this season. It will be the first participation in Germany’s highest cup competition in the club’s history. The match will not take place in the usual home of Leher, but instead at the Nordsee-Stadion, which has a larger capacity of 10,000. Due to security measures, the match on Saturday will be capped at an attendance of about 8,100.

Kick off at the Nord-see Stadion on Saturday is set for 15:30. Over 1,600 FC fans are expected to be in attendance.
