FC defender returns to training

Sobiech: Now I can go at it again

At the start of the season, Lasse Sobiech was one of 1. FC Köln’s top performers. Unfortunately, a complicated break of his big toe ruled him out of action. On Sunday, the defender re-joined team training for the first time since his injury. He spoke about his comeback and his charitable work in South Africa.

On Sunday, Lasse Sobiech spoke to the gathered media at Geißbockheim about…

…how he felt after his first session: “Naturally, straight after the first session back I’m a little tired. However, I have been really looking forward to today, through the whole of Christmas. Therefore, I’m very happy, that I’ve been able to join in again.”

…how his toe is: “Everything is good. It’s normal, that you have to work a little more when it’s your toe, until the mobility is completely back. But I’m pain free.”

…the long spell on the sidelines: “It was really tough. Before I was injured, I’d played a lot of games and for that reason, I wanted to be back as soon as possible. But it was important, to allow the injury to heal. Now I can go at it again in the second half of the season.”

…the upcoming training camp: “For me, the first few days are about getting back into things, getting back the strength to be able to play again. After that, I’d like to get back into the team. In this case, plenty of training sessions have come at the perfect time.”

…the battle for places in defence: “I think that it is similar to the summer, in pre-season. There we had a battle for places and now we have it again. I want to play, that much is clear. However, I know that won’t be easy.”

…his holiday in South Africa: “We visited friends who live there and also visited a football school. That is a project, which I’ve had contact with for quite a while now. With this football school, it’s about giving the kids from the township a chance to move forward with football and education. At the moment, 64 teams share a place there. It’s now trying to create the opportunities that more can train there, but also that more teachers can be provided. It’s about material things, such as footballs and shirts, so that the kids have a good feeling when they’re there. But also, of course, financial help. Before I got engaged in some way, I wanted to see it for myself. That’s what I did and now we’re speaking about how I can help there.”
