1-1 against Union

Split points at home

1. FC Köln hosted 1. FC Union Berlin for the first home fixture of the 2018/19 season. Christian Clemens put FC in front in the first half (41’), but Sebastian Andersson equalized for the hosts (69’) as both teams had to settle for a point.

FC head coach Markus Anfang made three changes to the eleven that started against VfL Bochum in the previous week. Lasse Sobiech took Jorge Meré’s place in the center of defense, while Jannes Horn and Niklas Hauptmann also slotted into the starting eleven in the places of Salih Özcan and Serhou Guirassy.

Slow start for FC

1. FC Köln needed some time to get their foot in this match as the visitors took initial control of the ball. Despite having the majority of possession, Union could not find any promising chances on the FC goal. FC were the first to really threaten when Jhon Cordoba was played through, but his shot from a tight angle was tipped away by Union goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz (29’). Dominick Drexler tried to score just a few minutes later, but his effort was also denied (33’).

Strong solo effort

It took some individual brilliance to open up this match. Christian Clemens picked up the ball in the opponent half, dribbled through two opponents, and unleashed a thunderous shot past Gikiewicz (41’). It was enough for FC to enter the half with their noses in front.

Crossbars on both sides

Just after the start of the second half, Timo Horn saved his side by tipping an opponent free kick onto his crossbar and away from goal (47’). Just one minute later, FC had a free kick of their own: Louis Schaub played the ball to Jonas Hector, but the FC captain’s header hit the crossbar.

Union equalize

FC appeared to be finding their groove as they continued to push forward in search of a second goal. It was in such one instance when Niklas Hauptmann was receiving the ball with his back to the opponent goal. He appeared to be fouled from behind, but no call was made as the Berlin players picked up the ball for a counter opportunity. The attack built up from the left side and was finished off in the box by Sebastian Andersson to tie the match (69’). FC searched for a winning goal in the closing stages, but it was not meant to be on this day.
