1:1 draw

Stalemate against Genk

1. FC Köln ended their training camp in Benidorm with a 1:1 draw with KRC Genk. Ismail Jakobs gave FC a deserved lead, before Theo Bongonda hit back late on for the Belgians.

FC end strongly

The half began with Genk on the front foot, and they very nearly opened the scoring. A fine cross from Ianis Hagi saw Mbwana Samatta head over at the back post. From there, FC gradually found their way into the game. After a week of intense training, the players were putting their all in on the final afternoon as both sides weren’t shy to go into their tackles.

Towards the end of the first period, FC found their feet and a fine ball from Marcel Risse picked out the run of Jhon Cordoba. Unfortunately, for the Colombian, his effort was blocked. Risse turned from provider to the man on the end of the cross, yet Maarten Vandevoordt was equal to his volley. The final chance of the half fell for Genk, yet Timo Horn was on hand to turn over Theo Bongonda‘s shot.

Honours even

FC began the second-half as they ended, despite making six changes during the break. Benno Schmitz and Ismail Jakobs combined well as the latter fired, with Mark Uth going similarly close moments later. Timo Horn had to be alert, however, as the ball fell kindly to Dries Wouters and he brought another solid save from the FC ‘keeper.

The breakthrough finally came on the hour mark. Jan Thielmann picked out Anthony Modeste, and the Frenchman returned the pass down the right flank. Thielmann crossed to the back post, and Ismail Jakobs thundered home on the volley. Modeste went close soon after with a header, while Jakobs cracked the post from another Thielmann cross.

However, it wasn’t to be for FC. Theo Bongonda picked up the ball on the edge of the box and hammered home a stunning strike to get Genk level. The remainder of the game provided little in the way of excitement, as Markus Gisdol’s men ended the training camp in Benidorm with a draw.

Attentions now turn back to the Bundesliga, as FC welcome VfL Wolfsburg to the RheinEnergieSTADION on January 18th to kickstart the Rückrunde.
