FC Season Review Part I

Starting Strong

1. FC Köln just had one of the most successful seasons in recent history. How did it all transpire? Part I of the season review looks back at the month of August.

While the FC players began returning to Cologne in July, Jonas Hector was out in France making his country proud. Following two training camps in Austria, it was finally time to get back to playing football for 1. FC Köln. The month of August featured two competitive matches: a DFB-Pokal fixture against BFC Preussen and the Bundesliga opener at home against SV Darmstadt 98. FC began the season with four new additions: Artjoms Rudnevs (Hamburger SV), Marco Höger (Schalke 04), Konstantin Rausch (Darmstadt 98), and Sehrou Guirassy (OSC Lille). Meanwhile, Sven Müller and Salih Özcan made the step up from the U21 to the First Team.

1. FC Köln had the fortune of kicking off the Bundesliga campaign with a home fixture. The opponent was SV Darmstadt 98 and the match was won comfortably by FC through goals from Marcel Risse and Anthony Modeste (2-0).

FC closed the month out in second place of the Bundesliga standings.

The season of 1. FC Köln officially began one week prior to the Bundesliga opener against Darmstadt. The first competitive match of the season saw FC travel to Berlin to take on BFC Preussen at the home stadium of 1. FC Union Berlin (Stadion an der alten Försterei). FC made no mistake against the fifth division side as Osako (2), Rausch, Modeste, Maroh, Risse, and Rudnevs all got on the scoring sheet in a 7-0 win.
