Matchday 18

The Number Crunch: At home against Wolfsburg

The Bundesliga is back at long last, and FC are back at home after 28 days since the win over Werder Bremen. VfL Wolfsburg are the visitors to the RheinEnergieSTADION at the weekend, and here are 10 stats to get you in the mood for the game.

FC are unbeaten against VfL Wolfsburg at home since Matchday 1 of the 2011-12 season. That has included two victories and two draws.

The previous two matches at home have both ended in 1:0 wins for 1. FC Köln. In 2017-18, FC secured the three points thanks to a Christian Clemens strike. The year before, it was Anthony Modeste’s solitary goal that made the difference.

Goals, goals, goals

Modeste has scored six goals and three assists against Wolfsburg – against no other team has the Frenchman registered so many scorer points. When Modeste has scored or assisted against Wolfsburg for FC, they have never lost.

Jhon Cordoba has scored in his last four FC home games – the last player to achieve that feat was Milivoje Novakovic in 2010-11 season, where he found the back of the net in five consecutive home games.

FC have had something of a thing for late goals this season. No Bundesliga club have scored more goals after the 90-minute mark than 1. FC Köln.

While FC lead the Bundesliga when it comes to headed goals (7), Wolfsburg have been equally adept at keeping them out at the other end. Oliver Glasner’s men have conceded just one header in their 17 Bundesliga games to date.

When Wolfsburg go ahead, they keep it. The Wolves have won all six of the games in which they have led this season – only Borussia Mönchengladbach can match that 100% record.

Wolves in form

Over the last few years, Wolfsburg have been formidable against promoted sides. In their last nine meetings with teams who have come up from 2. Bundesliga, they have won seven and drawn twice. The last time that they were beaten by a promoted side was in September 2017 (1:0 vs VfB Stuttgart).

Wolfsburg have enjoyed a great record against 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga. FC have won just 19% of their games against the Wolves, with only their record against FC Augsburg (9%) being worse.

On average, Wolfsburg score twice a game against FC. In the 27 Bundesliga meetings between the teams, the Wolfsburg have scored 54 times – their best record against any Bundesliga club that they have faced at least six times.
