Matchday 15

The Number Crunch: Away against Freiburg

1. FC Köln make the trip to Freiburg at the weekend and will be hoping to continue their improving away record this season. Christian Streich’s side are of the league’s most in-form sides, however. Here are 10 stats and facts to get you in the Matchday mood.

FC have the best away defence in the Bundesliga. In the six games away from home so far this season, FC have only conceded four times. That includes back-to-back clean sheets against Mainz and Leipzig.

Modeste milestone

Anthony Modeste made his 100th Bundesliga appearance for FC at the weekend against Augsburg. The striker has managed an impressive 44 goals in that timeframe.

Goals from Anthony Modeste and Ellyes Skhiri ended a 23-year wait for a win in Freiburg last season. The 2:1 triumph was the first since the 3:1 victory in 1996, where a late brace from Toni Polster secured all three points.

Markus Gisdol has never lost a game against Christian Streich as head coach. The FC manager has faced Streich six times, with an incredible six ending all square. The first victory between the two was the 4:0 win last season.

For the first time since 1996-97, FC won both games against SC Freiburg in the same season. After the 2:1 win in Freiburg, FC followed that up with a 4:0 home win against Christian Streich’s side.

FC and Freiburg have both managed to earn more points away from home this season. FC have taken nine of their 11 points thus far away from Köln, whilst Freiburg have managed nine at home; on their travels, it is an impressive 11.

Freiburg are on a real run of form lately, having not lost in their last six Bundesliga games. Christian Streich’s men have picked up an impressive 12 points from the last 12 on offer, the only side in the league to do so.

Freiburg firing on all cylinders

Vincenzo Grifo has been the leading light for Freiburg this season, tallying up seven goals and four assists. Only four players have contributed more goals to their team in the current Bundesliga campaign.

From the current crop of players in the Bundesliga, Nils Petersen has scored the fifth most goals against FC. Only Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry, Christian Gentner and Marco Reus have managed more goals than Petersen’s five.

Roland Sallai will be looking for his first home league goal for Freiburg at the weekend. The Hungarian has scored all three goals away from the Schwarzwald-Stadion so far, with only Niclas Füllkrug scoring more often away (4) without having a home goal to his name.
