The Number Crunch: Away to Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt and the Commerzbank-Arena will play host to 1. FC Köln on Wednesday evening. FC have enjoyed success in Frankfurt in the past and will be keen to get back to that as they aim to make it back-to-back wins.

Games between Frankfurt and FC tend to prove a first Bundesliga goal for players. That has been the case with Jonas Hector, Christian Clemens and Simon Terodde, but also for Eintracht’s Simon Falette and Mijat Gacinovic.

In the past, FC have enjoyed plenty of success in the past in Frankfurt. FC have won 12 times in Frankfurt, only in Stuttgart (14) have 1. FC Köln secured more wins. FC have also scored 63 times in Frankfurt – their Bundesliga best.

FC’s last penalty came against Frankfurt on 10th February 2018. FC’s wait for a spot-kick has now stretched to 27 Bundesliga games – the longest in the league.

The record of both sides in the Bundesliga is incredibly even, but is in FC’s favour. 1. FC Köln have won 31 times to Frankfurt’s 30. 25 of the encounters have ended in draws.

FC managing director, Horst Heldt made 67 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt between 1999 and 2001, scoring nine times. For 1. FC Köln, Heldt took to the pitch 151 times, finding the back of the net on 14 occasions.

Louis Schaub’s father, Fred was part of Eintracht Frankfurt’s 1980 UEFA Cup winning side. Schaub’s only game in the tournament was in the final against Gladbach, where he scored the winning goal after coming on as a substitute. Fred also won the DFB-Pokal with Frankfurt in the following season.

Formidable Frankfurt

Frankfurt have scored in 10 of their last 11 home matches in the league against FC, totalling 27 goals. However, there have also been issues at the other end. In eight of those games, Eintracht have conceded at least twice.

Despite FC’s strength away in Frankfurt, the last four games in the Commerzbank-Arena have all gone the way of Eagles. The most recent match between the sides ended in a 4:2 defeat in the 2017-18 season.

Filip Kostic has been one of the leading lights in the Bundesliga this season. The Serbian winger has managed the most crosses in the Bundesliga (89) and the third most involvements in shots on goal (78) in the league.

Frankfurt have already scored seven goals from corners this season, the best in the league. However, FC aren’t far behind. With five goals from corners, 1. FC Köln are in second place.
