Matchday 20

The Number Crunch: Derby away in Gladbach

1. FC Köln travel to Mönchengladbach on Saturday evening, hoping to end a busy week on a high. Gladbach will be keen to continue their good form in derbies of late, although it has recently been a case of better late than never for FC when it comes to the big game. Here are 10 stats and facts to prepare you for the clash.

FC have conceded just two goals from crosses this season, only VfL Wolfsburg boast a better record than FC when it comes to this statistic.

Jet-powered Jakobs

Marius Wolf’s brace against Arminia Bielefeld was his first in professional football. The FC wing-back last found the back of the net twice in one game whilst playing for 1860 München’s under-19s during their 6:1 win over Wacker Burghausen on 11th February 2013.

Emmanuel Dennis became the sixth Nigerian player to feature for FC in the Bundesliga during the game against Bielefeld, more than any other side. Dennis, Tolu Arokodare, Kingsley Ehizibue, Anthony Ujah, Sunday Oliseh and Manasseh Ishiaku make up the six-man list.

Ismail Jakobs was one of the key figures in the victory against Bielefeld, despite not getting on the scoresheet. The 21-year-old managed to cover 1km over sprints in the win, more than any other player on Matchday 19.

Both teams have shown their strength from set-piece situations this season. Gladbach have scored 16 goals from dead-ball situations, more than any other side and 44% of their tally this season. FC have managed seven, which accounts for 39% - the two top values in the Bundesliga.

Only Borussia Dortmund, Mainz and Schalke have conceded more goals in the last 15 minutes of games than Borussia Mönchengladbach (8). Three of FC’s last four derby wins have come with goals in the 88th, 91st and 95th minute respectively. Omen?

Gladbach are the only team in the Bundesliga yet to concede a goal in the opening 15 minutes of a game this season. Yann Sommer has also kept two clean sheets so far in 2021 – already one more than he did in the first 13 league games this campaign.

Stindl's super streak

Lars Stindl is enjoying one of his best ever seasons in the Bundesliga. The Gladbach attacker already has nine goals to his name after just 19 games. He has hit double figures twice in his career, and will be hoping to pass his best ever tally of 11 (2016-17) before the season is over.

Gladbach have started 2021 in superb form. Along with Eintracht Frankfurt, they are the only side not to have lost a competitive fixture since the turn of the year. Frankfurt (16) and Bayern (15) are the two teams who have taken more points than Marco Rose’s side (14) this term.

Stindl is not only Gladbach’s top goalscorer, but he has been the man to grab the all-important opening goal. The Foals’ captain has scored the first goal of the game on five occasions this season; no other player in the Bundesliga has managed that more often.
