Dejan Ljubicic was born to Bosnian Croats in Wien, after his parents fled the conflict in the Balkans. His parents are Roman Catholics and that is something that Ljubicic himself shares. His father, Zoran enjoyed a 20-year playing career and that hard work and determination to keep going is something that has transferred onto his son.

Dejan took his first footballing steps with Favoritner AC, before quickly being snapped up by the Rapid Wien academy. From there, he worked his way up the ladder going through all the youth teams in the Austrian capital before spending a season at Wiener Neustadt on loan. Following his return from loan, Ljubicic has been a key figure in the Rapid midfield.

During his time in the Austrian capital, Ljubicic made 131 appearances for Rapid and was named club captain this season. The defensive midfielder played 17 European games for his boyhood team and scored the all-important winning goal to help Rapid qualify for the knockout round in 2018-19. He leaves Rapid having helped them to back-to-back second-place finishes in the league.

Ljubicic confirmed his move to 1. FC Köln on 26th April 2021. The midfielder signed a four-year deal and said: “I decided relatively early on for 1. FC Köln. It is a huge traditional club. That is the next step for me, in order to develop myself as a footballer and a person.” Had Ljubicic remained in Wien, he would have been playing alongside his brother. Robert Ljubicic committed his future to Rapid after his contract with St. Pölten expired.
