Florian Kainz was born in Graz. He began his footballing career with FC Stattegg, before moving to Sturm Graz just before his seventh birthday. There, he made his way through the academy and made his first-team debut at the age of 17. Just a few days later, Kainz would also gain his first taste of contintental football. Against Juventus. In a Europa League qualification game, Kainz was in the starting side. Overall, he made 122 appearances and scored 21 goals for Sturm Graz.

In the 2014-15 season, the forward made the move inside the Austrian Bundesliga, leaving Sturm Graz to join Rapid Wien. He picked off exactly where he left off. Kainz continued to impress, so much so that Marcel Koller nominated him for the Austrian national team in 2015. Since then and also under Franco Foda, Kainz has been a regular member of the Austrian team.

Kainz made his way to the Bundesliga in 2017, as he swapped the green and white of Rapid Wien for the green and white of Werder Bremen. He made 59 appearances for Werder before joining FC in January 2019. He helped earn promotion back to the Bundesliga and has been a key member of the team ever since. He has been a leader and showed his resilience to battle back from a serious knee injury and play a crucial role in keeping the team in the league.
