Loses through the pandemic

2020-21 financial summary

FC Managing Director, Alexander Wehrle presented the financial figures for the 2020-21 season at the Annual Members’ Meeting this afternoon. The financial summary has been heavily influenced by the pandemic.

With a turnover of 140.6 million euros and a loss of 3.9 million euros after tax, 1. FC Köln presented an improved financial picture in the 2020-21 season compared to the previous year. This was mainly possible through the generation of special income. The figures were presented at the Annual Members’ Meeting on Saturday, 6th November 2021.

“The fall-out from the Corona pandemic in the 2020-21 season was felt by 1. FC Köln. The pandemic-related loss of revenue from the season, where almost every home game had to be played without fans, reached a total of 53 million euros. This enormous financial burden was only able to be mitigated thanks to the special income, in the form of forfaiting sponsorship income, in addition to the corresponding cost-cutting and counter measures introduced such as players and staff taking wage cuts, or internal corporate restructuring. But even in the second financial year marked by the pandemic, 1. FC Köln were able to rely on the solidarity of the FC family and the support of our season ticket holders and sponsors, who once again contributed to the improvement in financial figures. Our special thanks this year go Stadt Köln and the Kölner Sportstätten GmbH. Across the seasons, we have reached an economically viable agreement on the stadium lease for the period of reduced attendance at home games. This also meant that the loss under commercial law for the past financial year could be limited to 3.9 million euros, so that 1. FC Köln continued to have very stable equity of around 17 million euros as of June 30th 2021. Thanks to the exemplary support of our banks, in particular the Sparkasse KölnBonn, the current season’s financing has been also secured,” said FC Managing Director, Alexander Wehrle.

The important figures:

Annual turnover: 140.6 million euros (previous year: 122.5 million euros)
Annual result after taxes: -3.9 million euros (previous year: -23.8 million euros)
Operating result (EBITDA): 1.5 million euros (previous year: 0.6 million euros)
Equity: 16.9 million euros (previous year: 14.8 million euros)
