Steffen Baumgart continued to rotate the side ahead of the start of the season, in this the penultimate friendly game for his side. Only three players retained their starting spot from the Schaffhausen game, with Timo Hübers, Benno Schmitz and Dejan Ljubicic remaining in the line-up.
Before kick-off, with FC playing in black armbands, both teams stood for a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the recent flooding catastrophe.
SV Elversberg, playing in white bibs to avoid confusion between the win red and black, were quick out of the box but failed to make any early openings pay. Jan Thielmann and Anthony Modeste came to life in the 10th minute, with strong saves from Nicolas Kristof keeping the forward duo at bay. However, a strong counter from Elversberg saw Nico Karger pick his spot from 18 yards to curl home.
FC kept pilling on the pressure and were eventually rewarded in the 28th minute. A corner from Florian Kainz was met by Kingsley Ehizibue who, at the third time of trying, finally managed to head home at the back post. Anthony Modeste, Jan Thielmann and Timo Hübers were all superbly kept out by Kristof, who was proving to be a real thorn in FC’s side.
However, Baumgart’s side found a way through just before the break. It was another corner from Florian Kainz and a towering header from Anthony Modeste that left Kristof with no chance.
There were plenty of changes at the break, with just Kingsley Ehizibue, Mark Uth, Anthony Modeste and Jonas Hector surviving for the start of the second half. Chances were few and far between in the early stages of the second period, though Modeste and Salih Özcan both failed to capitalise on promising half-volley opportunities.
The Regionalliga Südwest side went close on the hour-mark after changing through almost their entire side. Jean Koffi got free at the back post but an excellent last-ditch tackle from Jorge Meré meant the ball deflected onto the post. Sebastian Andersson had the chance to kill the game once and for all, but his header from Noah Katterbach’s cross drifted wide. Ondrej Duda was denied by Frank Lehmann late on, with no third goal to be found for FC.
FC will spend one final night in Donaueschingen before returning to Köln on Sunday. The team will begin preparations for the last pre-season friendly against Roda JC Kerkrade, before focus turns to the DFB-Pokal first round against FC Carl Zeiss Jena.
